Protection against address swaps in crypto payments

Crypto payments can’t be reversed: if the wallet address is swapped on screen, the money goes to the criminal, for good. Proteside checks the address, network and amount before the funds are sent.

Stablecoins and crypto: 1. Normal purchase: The customer is about to copy the wallet address to pay. 2. Scam attempt: The scam swaps the address for a near-identical one owned by the criminal. 3. Blocked: Proteside detects the swap and blocks it before the funds are sent. 4. Payment intact: The legitimate address stays on screen. The payment reaches you.

To pay with crypto, the customer copies a wallet address or scans a QR code and sends the amount. The address is a long string nobody checks character by character, which is exactly what the scam counts on, swapping it for an address with a similar beginning and end.

How the attack happens without anyone noticing

  • Wallet address swapped

Malicious code replaces the displayed address, or the copied one, with the criminal’s, often with the same first and last characters. The customer pays in full, to the wrong wallet.

  • Tampered QR code

The QR code on screen is swapped for another one, with the same amount, pointing to the scammer’s wallet. Visually, it’s impossible to tell.

  • Altered network or amount

The scam can change the suggested network or the amount charged, diverting the difference on a payment method with no “cancel transaction” button.

How it works

Four layers between the scam and your payment

  • 1

    Record what’s legitimate

Proteside records the legitimate address, network and amount of every crypto charge on your page.

  • 2

    On-screen check

At the moment of payment, it checks the displayed address, the QR code and the content the customer copies.

  • 3

    Block before confirmation

Any mismatch is blocked before the funds are sent. With crypto, prevention is the only protection possible.

  • 4

    Alert and evidence

An alert with the tampered address on record, so your team can act fast.

Protection scope

What’s covered

  • Wallet address and QR code shown on the payment page
  • Content copied to the clipboard with the page’s button
  • Network and amount shown to the payer
  • Any coin or network your business accepts

Out of scope

  • Addresses the customer types or pastes from another source
  • The customer’s own wallets and exchanges
  • Confirmation on the blockchain, which is irreversible by design

Frequently asked questions

Why is protection so critical for crypto?

Because blockchain transactions are irreversible. There are no refunds: the only moment to stop a diversion is before confirmation, exactly where Proteside works.

Does it work with any coin?

Yes. Proteside checks the integrity of the displayed address, network, amount and QR code, so it works for Bitcoin, stablecoins and any other network your business accepts.
